Gemasolar

The first solar power plant called Gemasolar to use a new technology is sponsored by Masdar and SENER, a Spanish Engineering Company in Spain. The plant is made of a series of reflective mirrors, centered on a tower, which gets rays from the sun and transfers them to electricity. The technology uses the new idea of molten salt to store the energy through a fluid then to a turbine to power electricity.

These heliostat units were so big they were a big challenge to stabilize as they need a lot of control to position them correctly to maximize the sun’s heat and be stable in strong wind as well as generate power all day through a magnification process. The idea is to supply thousands of homes with power from the plant and the design is very cutting edge.
